Most people use the words interchangeably. You "put your deodorant on," even if what's actually in your hand is an antiperspirant. It's a fair mix-up, they sit on the same supermarket shelf, promise the same result, and get applied to the same spot every morning.
But they do genuinely different jobs, and understanding which one you're using changes what you should expect from it.
An antiperspirant's job is to stop sweat from reaching the surface of your skin. It does this with aluminium-based compounds, most commonly aluminium chlorohydrate or aluminium zirconium, which dissolve into your sweat ducts and form a temporary plug. No sweat gets out, so there's nothing for bacteria to break down, and no odour.
This is why antiperspirants are classified as a drug in some countries, including by the FDA in the US. They're changing a bodily function, not just masking a side effect of it.
It's also why they work so reliably against wetness. If sweat can't reach the surface, it genuinely can't show through your shirt. That's a real, measurable effect, not marketing.
A deodorant doesn't touch your sweat glands. You still sweat exactly as much as you normally would. What it does instead is manage what happens after you sweat.
Body odour isn't caused by sweat itself, fresh sweat is close to odourless. It's caused by bacteria on your skin breaking sweat down into the compounds we recognise as smell. A deodorant works by creating an environment those bacteria don't thrive in, through ingredients that shift the skin's surface pH or actively reduce bacterial activity, so there's less odour-causing breakdown happening in the first place.
This is the category Magnesium Hydroxide and Sodium Bicarbonate both belong to. Neither stops sweat. Both work against the bacteria responsible for the smell.
If you switch from an antiperspirant to a natural deodorant expecting the same dry, sweat-free result, you're going to be disappointed, not because the deodorant has failed, but because it was never designed to do that job.
You will sweat. That's not a malfunction, it's your body regulating its temperature exactly as it's meant to. What a well-formulated deodorant controls is the odour that follows, not the sweat itself.
This is also where a lot of the "natural deodorant doesn't work" reviews come from. The expectation was set by decades of antiperspirant marketing, and a deodorant, any deodorant, was never going to meet that bar because it's solving a different problem.
It's worth being fair to antiperspirants here too. Underarm sweat is a small fraction of your body's total sweat output, so plugging those particular glands doesn't meaningfully interfere with how your body regulates its core temperature, that's well established, not a grey area. What blocking does affect is local: sweat and bacteria that would normally reach the surface and evaporate get held at the gland instead, in a warm, enclosed, frequently shaved patch of skin. Over time, that's a plausible contributor to the clogged pores, irritation and disrupted underarm microbiome some people notice with long-term antiperspirant use, even without a whole-body health story attached to it. You don't have to believe blocking sweat is dangerous to think it's worth just letting a normal bodily process happen the way it's designed to.
Not universally, they're suited to different priorities.
Antiperspirants are the better choice if stopping visible sweat is the priority, high-stakes presentations, certain fabrics, specific medical situations like hyperhidrosis. Blocking sweat glands is an effective, well-studied mechanism for that specific job.
Deodorants are the better choice if you'd rather let your body do what it's designed to do and manage the odour that follows, without introducing aluminium salts to skin that's shaved, warm, and in prolonged contact with the product for hours a day.
It's worth being precise about where the aluminium concern actually comes from. The studies that first raised the alarm, aluminium chloride triggering tumour growth when applied to breast cells, were done on mouse mammary cells and mouse models, not humans, and results from mouse studies frequently don't hold up once tested in people. The large human studies that followed haven't found a confirmed link between antiperspirant use and breast cancer, and the NHS, American Cancer Society and National Cancer Institute currently all say the evidence doesn't support one. That's not quite a clean bill of health, real-world data on decades of daily human exposure is still limited, but it's a meaningfully different picture from what the original headlines implied. Plenty of people still choose to sidestep the question entirely rather than wait for a more definitive answer, and that's a reasonable call to make either way.
