Most people use the words interchangeably. You "put your deodorant on," even if what's actually in your hand is an antiperspirant. It's a fair mix-up, they sit on the same supermarket shelf, promise the same result, and get applied to the same spot every morning.
But they do genuinely different jobs, and understanding which one you're using changes what you should expect from it.
What an Antiperspirant Actually Does
An antiperspirant's job is to stop sweat from reaching the surface of your skin. It does this with aluminium-based compounds, most commonly aluminium chlorohydrate or aluminium zirconium, which dissolve into your sweat ducts and form a temporary plug. A deodorant doesn't touch your sweat glands. You still sweat exactly as much as you normally would. What it does instead is manage what happens after you sweat.

It's worth being precise about where the aluminium concern actually comes from. The studies that first raised the alarm, aluminium chloride triggering tumour growth when applied to breast cells, were done on mouse mammary cells and mouse models, not humans, and results from mouse studies frequently don't hold up once tested in people. The large human studies that followed haven't found a confirmed link between antiperspirant use and breast cancer, and the NHS, American Cancer Society and National Cancer Institute currently all say the evidence doesn't support one. Every leave-on product you put on your skin needs a preservative. Without one, water-containing formulas become a breeding ground for bacteria and mould within weeks, sometimes days. That's not a natural-versus-synthetic debate, it's basic chemistry.
The question worth asking isn't whether your deodorant is preserved. It's how.
Most People Never Check This
Preservative systems don't get much attention on ingredient lists. They're usually a few words near the bottom, easy to skim past in favour of the ones that sound nicer, essential oils, butters, botanical extracts.

What Does "Parfum" Mean on a Deodorant Label?
If you have ever turned over a deodorant and spotted the word Parfum on the ingredients list, you may have assumed it simply meant fragrance. Something pleasant added to make it smell nice.
But that one word is doing a lot more than that.
Parfum is not an ingredient. It is a legal loophole. And understanding what it actually means changes the way you read every personal care product label.
What "Parfum" actually means
Under EU and UK cosmetics regulations, manufacturers are permitted to list fragrance ingredients under a single collective term rather than naming each one individually. That term is Parfum or Fragrance, if the product uses the US convention.
This means a formula could contain anywhere from a handful to several dozen individual fragrance chemicals, and none of them have to be disclosed on the label. They all hide behind that one word.
The original purpose of this rule was to protect proprietary formulations. A brand's signature scent is considered a trade secret, and the law was designed to prevent competitors from simply reading the label and copying the blend.
That logic made sense in a different era.
But it has a cost for the person using the product.
Why it matters for your underarms specifically
Your underarms are not ordinary skin.
The skin there is thinner than most parts of your body. It is often freshly shaved or waxed, which creates micro-abrasions that allow ingredients to absorb more readily. And deodorant is a leave-on product, it sits against your skin for hours, sometimes all day.
That combination means that whatever is in your deodorant has more opportunity to interact with your skin than a product you rinse off.
If that product contains undisclosed fragrance components, you have no way of knowing what you are actually exposing your skin to.
For most people, that may never be a problem. But for people with sensitive skin, fragrance allergies or reactions to specific compounds, Parfum is a wall they cannot see past.
What can Parfum contain?
Fragrance blends can include synthetic aroma chemicals, fixatives, carrier solvents, preservatives and natural extracts, sometimes all in the same formula.
Some of these are benign. Some are known allergens. The EU and UK do require brands to disclose 26 specific fragrance allergens separately on the label if they are present above certain concentrations. But that list covers only a fraction of the thousands of fragrance compounds used in cosmetics.
Everything else can legally remain hidden behind Parfum.
Why most "natural" deodorants still use it
This is worth saying clearly, because it surprises a lot of people.
Many deodorant brands that market themselves as natural, clean or plant-based still list Parfum on their labels.
This happens for a few reasons.
Some brands use a commercial fragrance blend supplied by a third party. The blend is a finished product in itself, and its full composition is proprietary, so even if the brand wanted to disclose it, they may not have the full breakdown.
Some brands add Parfum as a small percentage and consider it low-risk, particularly if the rest of the formula is natural.
And some brands simply follow the conventional industry norm without questioning it.
None of this is necessarily illegal. But it does mean that the word "natural" on the front of a jar tells you very little about the transparency of what is actually inside it.
What to look for instead
If you want to know what is actually creating the scent in your deodorant, look for brands that list every fragrance ingredient individually by its INCI name.
INCI stands for International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients. It is the standardised naming system used across the beauty industry. When a brand names each essential oil individually, Citrus Aurantium Bergamia Peel Oil, Lavandula Angustifolia Oil, Pelargonium Graveolens Flower Oil, rather than grouping them under Parfum, you can see exactly what you are putting on your skin.
That is not common. But it is possible.
